Mega Millions Online: Rules, Tickets and Access Explained
Mega Millions is a US multistate lottery, but “playing Mega Millions online” can describe several very different things. An official state lottery may sell entries through its own website or app. A third party courier may take an order and arrange for a physical ticket to be bought from a retailer. A betting service may instead accept a wager based on the Mega Millions result without buying a lottery ticket at all.

Current Mega Millions rules
A standard Mega Millions play costs $5 under the game design introduced in April 2025. Players select five different white ball numbers from 1 through 70 and one Mega Ball from 1 through 24.
The old optional Megaplier no longer exists. Each $5 play now receives a randomly assigned 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X multiplier that applies to non-jackpot prizes. The jackpot itself is not multiplied.
Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Ticket sale cutoffs vary by jurisdiction, so there is no single nationwide last purchase time.
The jackpot starts at $50 million and rolls when no valid play matches all five white balls plus the Mega Ball. The advertised jackpot is an estimated annuity value. A jackpot winner generally chooses between the annuity and a cash option, subject to the rules of the lottery that sold the ticket.
The current jackpot odds are 1 in 290,472,336 per play. Overall odds of winning any prize are about 1 in 23.
Can Mega Millions tickets be bought online?
There is no single worldwide Mega Millions checkout. Official online sales are offered only by particular participating lotteries, and those systems normally use age, identity, residence or address checks and geolocation.
That means a person cannot assume that an official state lottery website will sell them a ticket simply because the website is visible from another state or country. The selling lottery's rules control the transaction.
Lottery couriers are different
A lottery courier or messenger may say that it accepts an order, purchases a physical ticket through a retailer, provides a ticket scan and stores the original. Those are provider specific procedures, not Mega Millions rules.
Before using any courier, check who operates it, where the ticket is bought, whether the service is authorized in that jurisdiction, who owns and holds the original ticket, what happens if an order cannot be fulfilled, how prizes are handled and whether the service is available where you live.
Do not confuse a courier with a lottery betting operator. A betting service may owe a payout under its own contract without giving the customer any claim against a US lottery.
Can non-US residents win Mega Millions?
Citizenship, residence, physical purchase location and claim rules are separate questions. Some US lotteries expressly allow non-US citizens to claim valid prizes. That does not create a universal right to order a Mega Millions ticket remotely from anywhere in the world.
A genuine winning ticket is normally claimed through the lottery jurisdiction where it was purchased. Large prizes may require the original ticket, identity documents, tax forms and, depending on the jurisdiction and claim method, personal travel.
US tax can also apply to a foreign winner. Residence country tax rules may apply separately.
