Can Canadians Play Mega Millions? Cross Border Tickets, Tax and Claims

Last verified: September 23, 2026

Canadians often search for Mega Millions because the US game is widely reported in Canada, especially when the jackpot is large. The fact that Canadians can be eligible to claim some US lottery prizes, however, is not the same as having an authorized way to order a ticket remotely from Canada.

There is no nationwide Canadian Mega Millions seller

Gambling and lottery regulation in Canada is largely provincial. Our September 2026 research did not verify a provincially authorized cross border Mega Millions courier that can be described as available across Canada.

Official US state lottery online sales are also territorial. They generally require the purchaser to be physically in the selling jurisdiction.

A commercial messenger needs separate verification

Some international services advertise the purchase of genuine US lottery tickets. For a Canadian customer, the important questions are whether the provider currently accepts the relevant province, where the ticket is bought, whether the customer owns the original and what procedure applies to a large prize.

Do not assume that a provider is provincially authorized simply because it accepts a Canadian address or card.

Minimum age depends on the province and product

There is no single Canadian age that safely describes every gambling product. Ontario, for example, permits lottery ticket purchases from age 18 while generally using 19 for broader online gaming.

A provider may also impose its own higher threshold.

Canadian and US tax are separate

The Canada Revenue Agency says ordinary lottery winnings generally do not have to be reported as taxable income, although later income earned from investing the prize can be taxable and unusual business or professional circumstances can differ.

A US Mega Millions prize can separately be subject to US federal withholding and potentially state tax. Statements that a Canadian winner automatically receives the advertised jackpot tax free are therefore wrong.

Practical guidance

A Canadian reader should verify the provider, province, US purchasing state, ticket custody terms and claim process before paying. If a substantial prize is involved, cross border tax and legal advice may be appropriate.
